Drug manufacturing, also known as pharmaceutical manufacturing, is the process by which active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished pharmaceutical products are produced. This complex industry involves several stages, starting from the research and development of new drug compounds to the large-scale production and packaging of medications. The initial stage involves identifying and synthesizing potential drug candidates. If successful, the drug moves into the manufacturing phase. This typically begins with the production of the API, the biologically active component of the drug. Production takes place in specialized facilities adhering to strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). These guidelines cover all aspects of the manufacturing process, including facility design, equipment calibration, personnel training, quality control testing, and documentation. Raw materials are meticulously sourced and tested before use. The manufacturing process itself can involve various techniques such as chemical synthesis, fermentation, or extraction, depending on the drug.

Once formulated, the drug is converted into its final dosage form, such as tablets, capsules, injections, or topical creams. This is followed by packaging and labeling, which must comply with regulatory requirements. Throughout the entire process, rigorous quality control measures are implemented, including in-process testing and final product analysis, to ensure each batch meets predetermined specifications for purity, potency, and consistency.
