Distinguibles is a term used to describe objects that can be differentiated from one another by some criterion or labeling. The concept is commonly contrasted with indistinguishables, which cannot be told apart by observable properties without introducing external identifiers. The term appears across disciplines such as philosophy, mathematics, and physics, where it helps clarify questions about identity, counting, and state descriptions.

In philosophy and logic, distinguishing criteria are central to theories of individuation and identity. Distinguishables are entities that possess different properties, relational positions, or labels that allow one to tell them apart. When a system is rearranged but the distinguishing criteria remain the same, some formulations treat the resulting configuration as equivalent, while others treat it as distinct, depending on whether labeling matters for the analysis at hand.

In mathematics and computer science, the distinction influences counting and enumeration problems. For a set of n distinguishable objects, there are n! possible orders. If objects are indistinguishable, many permutations correspond to the same configuration, and counting proceeds up to symmetry—often using partitions, multisets, or equivalence classes. A practical example is two balls that look identical versus two balls with distinct labels; the former yield fewer distinguishable arrangements than the latter.

In physics, distinguishability affects statistical treatment. Classical mechanics allows labeling of identical particles, but in quantum mechanics identical particles are fundamentally indistinguishable, which requires wavefunction symmetrization and leads to different statistical behaviors (such as Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics). The notion of distinguishables thus plays a key role in both conceptual debates and technical calculations across fields.
