Distantness is the quality or state of being distant, or remote, across dimensions of space, time, or relationship. It can describe physical remoteness, but also temporal gaps, perceptual or epistemic separations, and emotional or social distance. The term derives from the adjective distant, with roots in Latin distans, the present participle of distāre, meaning to stand apart.

Spatial distantness concerns measurable separation between objects or places. Temporal distantness refers to intervals in time, such as events in the past or future projections. Perceptual or epistemic distantness denotes limitations in understanding or perspective, while social distantness refers to perceived or real barriers between individuals or groups, including emotional detachment and cultural or institutional division.

Study of distantness occurs across disciplines. In psychology and sociology, perceived social distance and related constructs illuminate relationships and communication. In design and architecture, the sense of distance shapes movement, perception of scale, and atmosphere. In physics and cosmology, distantness is quantified with units of length and time, extending from everyday distances to interstellar and cosmological scales.

In culture and the arts, distantness often conveys awe, mystery, or the sublime. It can express estrangement, nostalgia, or longing, and influence how audiences evaluate place, narrative, and mood.
