This concept suggests that such an entity could be removed or absent without fundamentally altering the essential nature or identity of the larger whole to which it belongs. The idea is not necessarily about physical removal, but rather a conceptual or existential dispensability.

For example, a non-essential property of an object might be considered a dispensoida. If a painting has a specific scratch, the scratch itself is a distinct feature, but its absence would not change the fact that it is the same painting. The scratch, in this context, could be seen as dispensable. Similarly, in discussions of consciousness, some philosophers have debated whether certain phenomenal states or qualia are dispensoida – that is, whether a being could possess all the physical and functional properties of another but lack those specific subjective experiences without altering their essential identity as a conscious entity.
