Disinhibiting, or disinhibition, refers to the reduction or removal of inhibitory control over a system, resulting in greater expression of actions, thoughts, or signals that were previously restrained. The term is used across neuroscience, psychology, and everyday language to describe a release of restraint.

In neuroscience, disinhibition describes circuits in which inhibitory neurons suppress other inhibitory neurons, producing a net increase in activity of downstream neurons. Such disinhibitory motifs help coordinate timing, gating of information, and plasticity in cortical and subcortical regions. The effect can be rapid and context-dependent, arising from neuromodulators, sensory input, or learning.

In psychology and everyday use, disinhibition refers to diminished restraint under certain conditions, leading to impulsive, disinhibited, or socially inappropriate behavior. Causes include intoxication (notably alcohol), sleep deprivation, brain injury, or psychiatric disorders that impair executive control. Effects range from increased sociability or spontaneity to risk-taking, aggression, or illegal acts.

A related notion is online disinhibition, where anonymity, invisibility, or distance reduces social risk assessment, leading to more extreme or polarizing statements, harassment, or supportive acts that would not occur in person.
