Disembarkation is the act of leaving a vehicle or vessel after a journey. The term applies to ships, aircraft, and spacecraft, and encompasses the procedures by which passengers and crew exit safely and legally at the journey’s end.

In maritime operations, disembarkation occurs at a port or terminal after arrival. The ship’s master coordinates with port authorities, immigration and customs, and terminal staff. Procedures include accounting for people, moving baggage to handling areas, and using a gangway or stairs to connect vessel and shore. Safety, health checks, and any special assistance are arranged, and schedules may designate priority groups such as crew, transit passengers, or those needing accessibility support.

In aviation, disembarkation takes place when an aircraft reaches the gate and passengers exit via jet bridges or stairs. International arrivals undergo immigration and customs; domestic flights proceed to baggage claim. Ground handlers manage crowd flow, verify tickets, and provide assistance while maintaining safety and security.

Disembarkation is influenced by health, safety, and security regulations, and by the logistical capabilities of carriers, airports, and ports. It requires coordination among operators, authorities, and sometimes consignees for transfer or onward travel. In spaceflight, disembarkation refers to astronauts leaving a landing capsule after recovery, following strict procedures and quarantine protocols.
