The starting and ending points of the glide in a diphthong are crucial to its identity. For example, in English, the word "boy" contains a diphthong where the tongue starts in a position similar to the vowel in "bed" and moves towards a position similar to the vowel in "see". Similarly, the word "cow" features a diphthong that begins with a vowel sound like that in "caught" and glides towards a vowel sound like that in "foot". The specific phonetic realization of diphthongs can vary across different languages and dialects. Many languages have their own set of diphthongs, and some languages do not have diphthongs at all, relying solely on monophthongs.
