Dipalmitoyl refers to a chemical compound that contains two palmitoyl groups. A palmitoyl group is derived from palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid with a 16-carbon chain. Therefore, dipalmitoyl compounds are typically lipids, often esters, where palmitic acid has been incorporated twice.

One of the most well-known examples is dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC). DPPC is a major component of pulmonary surfactant, a complex mixture of lipids and proteins found in the lungs. Pulmonary surfactant plays a critical role in reducing surface tension in the alveoli, preventing them from collapsing during exhalation and facilitating breathing. Dysfunction of DPPC in surfactant can lead to respiratory distress syndrome, particularly in premature infants.

Another common dipalmitoyl compound is dipalmitoyl glycerol. This is a triglyceride where two of the three fatty acid chains esterified to glycerol are palmitic acid. These types of compounds are generally fat-soluble and can be found in various biological tissues and food sources. The presence of two long saturated fatty acid chains often contributes to the physical properties of these molecules, such as their melting point and solubility. They are frequently utilized in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries as emulsifiers, emollients, or as components in drug delivery systems due to their lipid nature and biocompatibility.
