In mathematical sketches, dimensiontime may be envisioned as part of a higher-dimensional manifold with D spatial coordinates and T temporal coordinates. Depending on the model, dimensiontime can function as a single extra dimension analogous to time, or as several separate time coordinates that permit branching, looping, or interacting timelines. This contrasts with conventional relativity, where spacetime blends space and time into a single four-dimensional continuum with one time dimension.

In physics, multiple time dimensions present conceptual difficulties: causality violations, ill-posed initial value problems, and issues with energy positivity.
