Dicarboxylic acids play important roles in biochemistry and industry. For instance, succinic acid is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, a fundamental metabolic pathway in living organisms. Adipic acid is a key precursor in the production of nylon. Many dicarboxylic acids are used as monomers in the synthesis of polymers, such as polyesters and polyamides. They also find applications as cross-linking agents, plasticizers, and in the food industry as acidulants. The reactivity of the carboxyl groups allows them to undergo esterification, amide formation, and decarboxylation reactions, making them versatile building blocks in organic synthesis.
