A dihybrid is an individual organism that is heterozygous for two different genes. This means that for each of these two genes, the dihybrid possesses two different alleles. For example, if we consider a gene for flower color with alleles for purple (P) and white (p), and a gene for seed shape with alleles for round (R) and wrinkled (r), a dihybrid could have the genotype PpRr. This individual carries one allele for purple and one for white, as well as one allele for round and one for wrinkled.

The concept of a dihybrid is fundamental in genetics, particularly in understanding Mendelian inheritance. When dihybrids are crossed with each other (a dihybrid cross), the inheritance patterns of the two genes can be observed. Gregor Mendel's experiments with pea plants, where he studied the inheritance of traits like seed color and seed shape simultaneously, provided crucial evidence for the law of independent assortment. This law states that alleles for different genes segregate independently of each other during gamete formation, provided the genes are located on different chromosomes or are far apart on the same chromosome.

Analyzing dihybrid crosses allows geneticists to determine the dominance relationships between alleles and to map the relative locations of genes on chromosomes. The phenotypic ratios observed in the offspring of dihybrid crosses, such as the classic 9:3:3:1 ratio for a cross between two heterozygotes with complete dominance, are key indicators of independent assortment. Deviations from this ratio can suggest linkage between genes.
