Differentiability refers to a property of a function that indicates whether it can be differentiated at a given point. A function is differentiable at a point if its derivative exists at that point. Geometrically, this means the graph of the function has a well-defined tangent line at that point, and the function is locally linear. The derivative of a function at a point represents the instantaneous rate of change of the function's output with respect to its input at that point.

In simpler terms, a function is differentiable if its graph is smooth and does not have any sharp corners, cusps, or vertical tangents. For a function of a single real variable, f(x), differentiability at a point x₀ means that the limit of the difference quotient, lim (h→0) [f(x₀ + h) - f(x₀)] / h, exists. This limit is the derivative of f at x₀, often denoted as f'(x₀).

If a function is differentiable at a point, it must also be continuous at that point. However, the converse is not always true; a function can be continuous at a point but not differentiable there. For example, the absolute value function, f(x) = |x|, is continuous at x=0 but not differentiable at x=0 due to the sharp corner at that point. Differentiability is a crucial concept in calculus and has wide-ranging applications in physics, engineering, economics, and many other fields where understanding rates of change and optimization is important.
