Diazonium salts are a group of organic compounds with the general formula [RN₂]⁺X⁻, where R is an organic group, typically an aryl group, and X⁻ is an anion. They are characterized by the presence of a diazonium group (−N₂⁺). These compounds are generally unstable and are often prepared and used immediately in situ.

The synthesis of diazonium salts is typically achieved through the diazotization of primary aromatic amines. This reaction involves treating the amine with nitrous acid (HNO₂), which is usually generated in situ from sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) and a strong acid like hydrochloric acid (HCl) or sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) at low temperatures, typically between 0 and 5 °C. The low temperature is crucial to prevent the decomposition of the diazonium salt.

Diazonium salts are highly versatile intermediates in organic synthesis. Their most important reaction is the Sandmeyer reaction, where the diazonium group can be replaced by various nucleophiles, such as halogens (Cl, Br, I), cyanide (CN), or hydroxyl groups (OH), catalyzed by copper(I) salts. Another significant reaction is the Schiemann reaction, which allows for the introduction of fluorine atoms. Diazonium salts can also undergo coupling reactions with phenols and aromatic amines to form intensely colored azo compounds, which are widely used as dyes and pigments. Due to their reactivity and instability, diazonium salts require careful handling and storage.
