Diastolic refers to the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes. This relaxation allows the heart chambers, specifically the ventricles, to fill with blood. During diastole, the atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid) are open, allowing blood to flow from the atria into the ventricles. Simultaneously, the semilunar valves (aortic and pulmonary) are closed, preventing backflow into the arteries.
