Diagenesis refers to all physical, chemical, and biological changes that happen to sediment after it is deposited but before it is subjected to metamorphism. These changes occur at relatively low temperatures and pressures, typically at or near the Earth's surface. Diagenetic processes transform loose sediment into sedimentary rock.

Key diagenetic processes include compaction, cementation, dissolution, recrystallization, and replacement. Compaction occurs as the weight of overlying sediment squeezes out pore water and reduces the pore space between grains. Cementation happens when minerals precipitate from pore water and bind the sediment grains together, effectively lithifying the sediment into rock. Common cements include calcite, silica, and iron oxides. Dissolution can remove unstable minerals or create secondary porosity. Recrystallization involves the change in size and shape of mineral grains without changing their chemical composition. Replacement occurs when one mineral is dissolved and another precipitates in its place.

Biological activity also plays a role in diagenesis. Microorganisms can alter the pore water chemistry, contribute organic matter, and burrow through sediments, affecting their physical structure. Diagenesis is crucial for understanding the formation of various sedimentary rocks like sandstone, limestone, and shale, and it significantly influences the rock's porosity and permeability, which are important factors for hydrocarbon reservoirs and groundwater aquifers.
