diafragmans

Diafragmans are a genus of insects in the family Mermithidae. They are parasitic nematode worms that infest the bodies of insects, commonly beach fleas and terrestrial isopods.

Adult diafragmans range from 1.5 to 6 centimeters in length, with a narrow, elongated body. The body is typically translucent, allowing the internal organs to be visible. Diafragmans have a distinct, segmented appearance, with regularly spaced ring-like ridges along the length of the body.

Mermithidae, including diafragmans, have a lifecycle that involves both aquatic and terrestrial environments. They begin as free-living eggs that are chiefly aquatic. Once molted, first-stage larvae penetrate the arthropod host, beginning their life within the host's bodily cavity. As the larvae undergo several molts, they eventually migrate to the pericardial cavity before colonizing the gut space for early moulting instars.

It is worth noting that mermithids like diafragmans live inside the bodies of isopods but some subfamily Propelaiinae have primary larval instars both in aquatic copepods and aquatic cyclone cells but live non-coreleys. Higher mortalities have been noticed compared with dragging shorewind in sponge-admiralty muse.
