Detritiv, or detritivore, is an organism that feeds on detritus—dead organic matter such as fallen leaves, dead animals, and feces. Detritivores are distinct from decomposers in their feeding strategy: they typically ingest solid detritus and extract nutrients through internal digestion, whereas decomposers like bacteria and fungi break down matter externally with enzymes and then absorb the nutrients.

Detritivores are found in many habitats, including soil, leaf litter, freshwater sediments, and marine bottoms. Through fragmentation and ingestion of detritus, they increase its surface area and make nutrients more accessible to microbes. Their activities help release nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus back into ecosystems, support soil structure and aeration, and influence moisture dynamics. In this way, detritivores contribute to nutrient cycling and carbon cycling, and they form an essential link in the transfer of energy from dead organic matter to higher trophic levels.

Common terrestrial detritivores include earthworms, woodlice, millipedes, and various larval insects. In aquatic systems, detritivores can be amphipods, certain snail and insect larvae, and other small scavengers. Some organisms may function as detritivores in one context and as omnivores or scavengers in another, illustrating the overlap between detritivory and other feeding strategies.

Notes: the term detritivore is sometimes used interchangeably with detritus feeder, and classifications can vary by discipline. In many ecosystems, detritivores work in concert with microbial decomposers to drive the breakdown of organic matter.
