Destillasjon is a process used to separate components of a liquid mixture by selective boiling and condensation. The fundamental principle relies on the fact that different substances have different boiling points. When a liquid mixture is heated, the component with the lowest boiling point will vaporize first. This vapor is then collected and cooled, causing it to condense back into a liquid, which is now richer in the more volatile component. The remaining liquid will be enriched in the less volatile components.

There are several types of distillation, each suited for different applications. Simple distillation is the most basic form and is effective for separating liquids with significantly different boiling points or for separating a volatile liquid from a non-volatile solute. Fractional distillation is employed when the boiling points of the components are close. It uses a fractionating column, which provides a larger surface area for repeated vaporization and condensation cycles, leading to a more efficient separation. Steam distillation is used for temperature-sensitive compounds that might decompose at their normal boiling points. In this method, steam is passed through the mixture, lowering the boiling point of the components. Vacuum distillation is used for compounds with very high boiling points or those that are prone to decomposition at atmospheric pressure. By reducing the pressure, the boiling points are lowered.
