Demonyming is the practice of creating and assigning demonyms—the words used to denote the residents or natives of a place. A demonym can function as an adjective (for example, in “Nigerian cuisine”) or as a noun (“a Nigerian”). Demonyms are part of toponymy and are related to ethnonyms, which name ethnic groups; however, demonyms identify origin from a place rather than ethnicity. A further distinction is between endonyms, the terms locals use for themselves, and exonyms, names used by outsiders.

Demonym formation varies across languages and places. In English, place names yield a range of forms, such as American, Canadian, Brazilian, Chinese, Japanese, British, Danish, and Swedish. Some demonyms are formed with specific suffixes, while others arise from unique historical usage or cultural conventions, producing terms like Parisian or Londoner. Not all places follow a uniform pattern, and multiple forms may coexist for the same locale. Irregularities and debates over preferred usage are common, especially when communities prefer self-designations distinct from established outsiders’ terms.
