The Democrat-Republican Party, often referred to as the Republican Party in historical context, was a political party in the United States active from 1792 to 1824. It was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The party was a direct response to and opposition to the Federalist Party, which was led by Alexander Hamilton. The Democrat-Republicans advocated for states' rights and a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. They believed in an agrarian society and were wary of a strong central government and the growth of industrialization and finance that the Federalists supported.
