Dell'innervazione is an Italian term that translates to "denervation" in English. Denervation refers to the interruption of the nerve supply to a part of the body, most commonly a muscle. This interruption can occur at various points along the nerve pathway, from the central nervous system (brain or spinal cord) to the peripheral nerve fibers that directly innervate the target tissue.

There are two primary types of denervation: upper motor neuron denervation and lower motor neuron denervation. Upper motor neuron denervation originates from damage to the brain or spinal cord, affecting the pathways that control voluntary movement. Lower motor neuron denervation involves damage to the peripheral nerves or the motor neurons in the spinal cord that directly connect to muscles.

Causes of denervation can be diverse and include trauma, surgical procedures, inflammatory conditions, infections, autoimmune diseases, and degenerative neurological disorders. Symptoms associated with denervation vary depending on the cause and the extent of nerve damage, but often include muscle weakness, paralysis, loss of sensation, and atrophy (wasting) of the affected muscles. Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies are common diagnostic tools used to assess the presence and severity of denervation. Treatment strategies aim to address the underlying cause and may involve physical therapy, occupational therapy, medications, or surgical interventions.
