Deliquescence is a phenomenon observed in certain chemical substances, typically salts, where they absorb moisture from the surrounding atmosphere until they dissolve in the absorbed water, forming a liquid solution. This process occurs when the vapor pressure of the substance is lower than the partial pressure of water vapor in the air. Substances that exhibit deliquescence are said to be deliquescent.

The degree to which a substance is deliquescent depends on its chemical composition, the ambient temperature, and the humidity of the air. Conversely, hygroscopic substances absorb moisture from the air but do not necessarily dissolve. Efflorescent substances, on the other hand, can lose their water of crystallization to the atmosphere, becoming powdery. Deliquescence is a specific type of hygroscopic behavior where dissolution is a key outcome. The process is generally reversible, meaning that if the surrounding air becomes dry, the dissolved salt may recrystallize. Understanding deliquescence is important in various fields, including chemistry, materials science, and agriculture, particularly in the storage and handling of sensitive materials.
