The public key can be freely distributed, while the private key must be kept secret by its owner. When data is encrypted with a public key, only the corresponding private key can decrypt it. Conversely, data encrypted with a private key can be decrypted with the corresponding public key, a process used for digital signatures. The security of encrypted data relies heavily on the secrecy and proper management of decryption keys.
