It occurs when dissolved gases, primarily nitrogen, in the body's tissues form bubbles as the pressure decreases. These bubbles can block blood vessels, cause pain in joints and muscles, and lead to neurological symptoms. The risk is higher with deeper or longer dives, rapid ascents, and repeated exposures. Prevention involves slow, controlled ascents with decompression stops as needed, following established dive tables or dive computers. Treatment typically involves recompression in a hyperbaric chamber to help dissolve the gas bubbles.
