Dehumidification is the process of removing moisture from the air. This is typically done using a dehumidifier, an electrical appliance that draws in air and cools it, causing water vapor to condense into liquid water. This collected water is then stored in a reservoir or drained away. Dehumidifiers are often used in homes and businesses to control humidity levels, which can have several benefits.

Maintaining optimal humidity levels, generally between 30% and 50%, can help prevent the growth of mold, mildew, and dust mites, which can trigger allergies and respiratory problems. High humidity can also damage property by causing wood to warp, paint to peel, and electronics to corrode. Conversely, excessively dry air can lead to dry skin, irritated sinuses, and static electricity.

Dehumidifiers work by passing air over a cold coil. As the air cools below its dew point, the water vapor in it condenses into liquid water. This water is collected, and the drier air is then reheated to room temperature before being released back into the environment. Some dehumidifiers also employ desiccants, materials that absorb moisture from the air, as an alternative or supplementary method. The collected moisture is then typically disposed of.
