Defosforylacja refers to the removal of a phosphate group from a molecule, typically a protein or a small molecule. This process is often catalyzed by enzymes called phosphatases. Dephosphorylation is a crucial regulatory mechanism in cellular processes, as the addition or removal of phosphate groups, known as phosphorylation and dephosphorylation respectively, can significantly alter the activity, localization, or stability of proteins and other molecules.

In many signaling pathways, phosphorylation acts as an "on" switch, while dephosphorylation acts as an "off" switch.
