Deflocculation is the process of breaking down or preventing the aggregation of particles in a suspension or dispersion. In simpler terms, it's about keeping fine particles separated and evenly distributed rather than allowing them to clump together. This is often achieved by adding specific chemical agents known as deflocculants or dispersants.

These deflocculants work by altering the surface properties of the particles. They might adsorb onto the particle surfaces, creating electrostatic repulsion or steric hindrance between them. Electrostatic repulsion occurs when the deflocculant imparts a similar charge to all particles, causing them to repel each other.
