Its exact nature remains unsettled; some researchers treat defensiner as a distinct protein, while others view it as a functional class of small secreted peptides.

Predicted to be a small, secreted or extracellular protein, many isoforms are reported to carry an N-terminal signal peptide. The mature product is thought to vary in cysteine content by species, and secondary structure is predicted to be flexible, potentially including alpha-helical or beta-sheet elements.
