Defekography is a medical imaging technique used to evaluate and diagnose defecation disorders. Also known as dynamic pelvic floor radiography or functional defecation imaging, it provides a visual representation of the anorectal and pelvic floor structures during the process of defecation. The procedure involves filling the rectum with a contrast agent, typically barium, which allows for clear visualization of the anal canal, rectum, and surrounding pelvic muscles. Patients are then asked to sit on a specialized X-ray toilet and simulate the act of defecation.

A series of X-ray images are taken at various stages of this process, including resting, straining, evacuation, and squeezing. This dynamic imaging allows radiologists and gastroenterologists to assess the coordination of the pelvic floor muscles, the degree of rectal prolapse, the presence of rectocele or enterocele, and the efficiency of the defecation process. Abnormal findings can include incomplete emptying, obstructed defecation, or improper muscle function. Defekography is a valuable tool in understanding the biomechanics of defecation and guiding treatment strategies for conditions such as chronic constipation, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse. It is generally considered a safe procedure, though it involves radiation exposure.
