Dedukce (Czech: dedukce) is a form of reasoning that derives specific conclusions from general premises. In a deductive argument, if the premises are true and the reasoning is valid, the conclusion must be true. Deduction seeks certainty about conclusions given the stated assumptions.

Deduction is distinct from induction, which generalizes from particular cases, and from abduction, which infers the most plausible explanation. While induction can yield likely generalizations, and abduction offers plausible hypotheses, deduction aims at necessary conclusions that follow from accepted premises under established rules of inference.

Key methods and structures in deduction include syllogistic reasoning, mathematical deduction, and modern formal proofs. Common rules of inference encompass modus ponens (if p implies q and p is true, then q is true) and modus tollens (if p implies q and q is false, then p is false), as well as direct deduction, proof by contradiction, and proof by contrapositive. In mathematics and logic, deductions are often presented within formal systems such as natural deduction or sequent calculus.

History and development: Deduction has deep roots in Aristotle’s syllogistic, which organized arguments about general propositions. The mathematical tradition, notably Euclid, used deductive proofs from axioms. In the 19th and 20th centuries, formal logic by Frege, Peano, Russell, and Hilbert transformed deduction into rigorous formal systems, enabling precise proofs in mathematics and computer science.

Applications and significance: Deduction underpins mathematics, logic, computer science, and the rigorous structure of scientific arguments.
