Dedifferentiation is a biological process where a specialized cell reverts to a less specialized or progenitor cell state. This means a cell that has already acquired a specific function and structure can lose some or all of those characteristics and become more like a stem cell. This phenomenon is observed in various organisms and tissues, playing a significant role in processes like regeneration and wound healing.

In plants, dedifferentiation is a well-established mechanism. For instance, mature plant cells, such as those in the vascular tissue or parenchyma, can dedifferentiate to form a callus, which is an unorganized mass of cells. From this callus, new organs or tissues can regenerate, demonstrating the plasticity of plant cells. This ability is widely exploited in plant tissue culture for propagation and research.

In animals, dedifferentiation is also observed, though it is often more restricted and can be context-dependent. Certain adult stem cells and progenitor cells exhibit a degree of dedifferentiation, enabling them to proliferate and differentiate into various cell types needed for tissue maintenance and repair. For example, in some species, complex regenerative abilities, such as limb regeneration in salamanders, involve significant dedifferentiation of cells at the injury site. While the precise molecular mechanisms are still under investigation, dedifferentiation is a fascinating aspect of cellular plasticity and regeneration.
