In the decimal system, each position represents a power of ten. Moving from right to left, the positions represent units (10^0), tens (10^1), hundreds (10^2), thousands (10^3), and so on. For example, the number 345 can be broken down as (3 * 10^2) + (4 * 10^1) + (5 * 10^0), which equals 300 + 40 + 5.

The introduction of a symbol for zero (0) was a crucial development in the decimal system, allowing for the representation of numbers like 101, where the zero indicates the absence of a value in the tens place. This positional notation greatly simplifies arithmetic operations compared to earlier non-positional systems like Roman numerals.

The decimal system has its origins in ancient India, where the concept of zero and a positional notation system was developed.
