A decanteerkaraf, often simply called a decanter, is a vessel used primarily for decanting wine. Decanting involves pouring wine from its bottle into a separate container. The primary reasons for decanting are to separate the wine from any sediment that may have formed in the bottle over time, particularly in older wines, and to aerate the wine. Aeration, or allowing the wine to come into contact with oxygen, can soften tannins and allow the complex aromas and flavors of the wine to develop more fully.

Decanteerkaraffen are typically made of glass or crystal and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some are designed with wide bases to maximize the surface area of the wine exposed to air, while others have narrower necks. The shape of the decanter can influence the rate and extent of aeration. For young, robust wines with significant tannins, a decanter with a wide base is often preferred to encourage aeration. For older wines that are more delicate, a decanter with a gentler pouring surface and less aeration may be more suitable.

The process of decanting involves carefully pouring the wine from the bottle into the decanteerkaraf, aiming to leave any sediment behind in the bottle. This is often done by holding a light behind the neck of the bottle as it is poured to clearly see when the sediment approaches the opening. After decanting, the wine is typically left to sit in the decanteerkaraf for a period ranging from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the age and style of the wine, before being served.
