Debasare is an Italian verb meaning to debase, or to degrade the value or quality of something. In economic and monetary contexts, it refers to currency debasement—the process by which the value of money is lowered, typically by reducing the precious metal content of coins, altering coin weight, or issuing more coinage with the same face value. Debasement has been used in various historical periods to increase government revenue or finance expenditures, but it often reduces public trust in money and can lead to inflation or financial instability.

Historically, debasement occurred most notably in medieval and early modern economies, when rulers sought to stretch resources by lessening the metal content of coins while maintaining nominal denominations. Methods included reducing fineness, adding less valuable metals, or introducing minting practices that altered the intrinsic value of currency. The consequences could include rising prices, loss of public confidence, and a shift toward alternative payment means, such as foreign coins or barter.

Beyond its monetary sense, debasare is used metaphorically to describe the erosion of standards, ethics, or quality in other spheres—such as politics, media, or corporate governance—where practices or performances are perceived as degraded or degraded in value relative to prior norms.
