Deathmetals, often referred to as death metal, is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. It emerged in the mid-1980s, developing from thrash metal and incorporating elements of hardcore punk. Key characteristics of death metal include highly distorted guitars, blast beat drumming, fast tempos, and guttural vocals, often described as growls or shrieks. Lyrical themes typically explore morbid and violent subjects such as death, gore, war, and the occult.

Early pioneers like Death, Possessed, and Morbid Angel are credited with laying the groundwork for the genre. Over time, death metal has diversified into numerous subgenres, each with its own distinct characteristics. These include technical death metal, known for its complex song structures and instrumental prowess; melodic death metal, which blends aggressive vocals and instrumentation with more melodic guitar passages; and brutal death metal, which emphasizes extreme speed and brutality.

Despite its often controversial lyrical content and extreme sound, death metal has cultivated a dedicated global following. The scene is characterized by underground zines, independent record labels, and live performances that often feature intense energy. The genre continues to evolve, with bands constantly pushing the boundaries of its sonic and thematic elements.
