Dataproveniens, also known as data provenance, is the documentation of the origins and history of data, describing where data comes from, how it was created, and the transformations it has undergone. It aims to provide a trustworthy record that enables users to assess quality, reproduce results, and audit data processing.

A data provenance record typically includes source data identifiers, timestamps, the systems and personnel involved, transformation steps, algorithms, parameter settings, and the relationships between datasets. It may capture lineage (where a data item originated) and derivations (how it was produced).

Standards and models. Several approaches exist to structure provenance information, with the W3C PROV family of specifications being widely adopted. Provenance can be captured as metadata, log entries, or dedicated provenance graphs, across data pipelines, databases, and analytical notebooks. Types include data lineage, process provenance, and dataset provenance.

Benefits and uses. Provenance supports reproducibility in research and analytics, enables auditing and regulatory compliance, helps diagnose data quality issues, and informs impact analysis when datasets are updated or integrated. It also facilitates trust and accountability in data-driven workflows.

Challenges. Collecting and storing provenance can incur overhead and complexity, especially in large, streaming, or distributed environments. Privacy and security concerns may arise when provenance includes sensitive information. Versioning, standardization, and interoperability remain ongoing concerns.
