Datakentti, literally “data field” in Finnish, refers to a single unit of information that can be stored, displayed, or processed. In database systems and structured data models a datakentti is one column in a table, one property of an object, or one entry in a form. It is identified by a name, datatype (text, integer, date, etc.), and optional constraints such as length, uniqueness, or default value.

Datakenttiä play a central role in relational databases, where each table contains multiple fields that together define a record. In object‑oriented programming they correspond to member variables or attributes of a class. In web forms and user interfaces the term usually denotes an input control that collects a single piece of user data, such as a textbox for a name or a drop‑down list for a country.

Design of datakentti–based structures follows norms of data modeling: normalisation rules help to reduce redundancy and improve integrity. Common practices include using primary keys to uniquely identify rows, foreign keys to enforce relationships, and indexes to speed up search. Validation rules – required fields, allowed ranges, and format checks – are often applied at the field level.

In spreadsheets the equivalent of a datakentti is a column header; the underlying data type may be inferred from cell contents but can be explicitly set to text, number, or date. Across all contexts, clear naming, consistent typing, and explicit constraints make a data field easy to maintain, document, and reuse.
