The term is used in fields such as materials science, mining, construction, pharmaceuticals, and food processing to assess exposure risks and handling characteristics. Etymologically, it derives from damm (dust) and -ighet (a suffix indicating a state or quality).

Dammighet depends on several factors, including particle size distribution, shape and density, moisture content, surface roughness, cohesion and electrostatic charging, and environmental conditions like humidity and airflow.
