A cytotechnologist, sometimes spelled cytotechnologer in informal usage, is a healthcare professional who specializes in preparing, staining, and examining cellular specimens to detect abnormalities that may indicate disease, including cancer. They typically work under the supervision of a cytopathologist in clinical laboratories and participate in the evaluation of a variety of specimens, such as Pap tests, body fluids, and fine-needle aspiration samples.

Key duties include preparing and staining slides, screening slides under the microscope to identify suspicious cells, and providing a preliminary interpretation or triage for further review by a cytopathologist. Cytotechnologists perform quality control and assurance activities, ensure specimen adequacy, maintain laboratory equipment, and document findings. In some settings they assist with rapid on-site evaluation of FNA samples (ROSE) to guide specimen collection.

Education and certification requirements vary by country but commonly involve a bachelor’s degree in cytology or a related field followed by completion of an accredited cytotechnology program. Professional certification is typically offered by national or regional bodies, such as certification as a Cytotechnologist (CT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in the United States, with ongoing continuing education to maintain credentialing. Licensure requirements may also apply in certain jurisdictions.

Workplaces for cytotechnologists include hospital laboratories, cancer centers, reference laboratories, and academic institutions. The role emphasizes meticulous attention to detail, strong microscopic skills, and the ability to work as part of a diagnostic team to support cytopathologists and patient care.
