Cytochrome-containing is a descriptive term used for biomolecules, cells, or organisms that possess cytochromes, a broad class of heme-containing proteins that participate in electron transfer. Cytochromes are characterized by their ability to cycle iron between ferrous (Fe2+) and ferric (Fe3+) states during redox reactions.

Cytochromes are central components of cellular energy metabolism. In mitochondria and many bacteria, they form part of the electron transport chain, supporting oxidative phosphorylation. In chloroplasts and photosynthetic bacteria, cytochromes participate in photosynthetic electron flow. Several distinct families exist, including cytochromes b, c, c1, a and a3, each with specific redox properties and locations in enzyme complexes such as respiratory oxidases and photosynthetic bc1 and b6f complexes.

Structurally, cytochromes differ by the type of heme they carry. The most common are heme b and heme a, which are non-covalently bound, and heme c, which is typically covalently attached via a CXXCH motif. These features influence spectral properties, redox potential, and interaction with partner proteins.

Cytochrome-containing proteins extend beyond respiration. Cytochrome P450 enzymes, for example, are heme-thiolate monooxygenases involved in steroid synthesis, drug metabolism, and detoxification. Cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) and cytochrome bc1 (complex III) are multi-subunit assemblies that physically transfer electrons to oxygen, reducing it to water.

Identification often relies on spectroscopic signatures, such as the Soret band near 400 nm, and electrochemical measurements of redox potential. The presence of cytochromes indicates reliance on redox chemistry for energy capture, detoxification, signaling, or programmed cell death in some contexts.
