Cyclohexanone is a cyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C6H10O. It is a colorless, oily liquid with a distinct odor, often described as minty or acetone-like. The molecule consists of a six-carbon ring with a ketone functional group (a carbonyl group C=O) attached to one of the carbons. Cyclohexanone is a saturated cyclic ketone.

It is primarily produced industrially through the oxidation of cyclohexane or the hydrogenation of phenol. Cyclohexanone is a significant industrial solvent and a precursor in the synthesis of various important chemicals. Its most notable application is in the production of nylon-6 and nylon-6,6, as it is a key intermediate in the synthesis of caprolactam and adipic acid, respectively, both essential monomers for these polymers.

Beyond its role in polymer production, cyclohexanone also finds use as a solvent for resins, lacquers, and as an additive in paints and varnishes. It can also be employed in the formulation of certain adhesives and in the extraction of certain organic compounds. Due to its chemical properties, it readily undergoes reactions typical of ketones, such as nucleophilic addition.
