A cut section, also known as a section view or cross-section, is a drawing technique used in technical illustrations and engineering to reveal internal features of an object that would otherwise be hidden. It is created by imagining an object is cut by an invisible plane, and then the portion of the object between the viewer and the cutting plane is removed. The remaining portion of the object, showing the newly exposed internal surfaces, is then depicted.

The cutting plane is typically represented by a line on an adjacent view, often with arrows indicating the direction of view. The surfaces created by the cut are usually indicated by hatching lines, which are parallel lines drawn at an angle to denote the material of the object. Different types of hatching can represent different materials. Cut sections are crucial for understanding the complexity of designs, assembly instructions, and manufacturing processes, as they clearly illustrate components, their relationships, and internal structures like holes, voids, and internal mechanisms. They are commonly found in blueprints, technical manuals, and product diagrams.
