Cultivar names are typically written in the vernacular language, not in Latin, and are not italicized. They are often enclosed in single quotation marks, for example, 'Golden Delicious' apple.

Groups are used when a cultivar name applies to a group of plants with similar characteristics, such as the 'Granny Smith' group of apple cultivars. The ICNCP also deals with how plant names are formed, how they are registered, and how disputes are resolved.
