The csípízület, commonly known as the hip joint in English, is a ball-and-socket synovial joint. It is formed by the articulation of the head of the femur (thigh bone) and the acetabulum of the pelvis (hip bone). This structure allows for a wide range of motion in multiple planes, including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, medial rotation, and lateral rotation. The hip joint is one of the body's largest and most stable joints, crucial for weight-bearing and locomotion.

The joint is surrounded by a strong articular capsule, reinforced by several ligaments that contribute to its stability. The acetabulum is deepened by a ring of fibrocartilage called the labrum, which increases the contact area with the femoral head and helps to create a seal, holding synovial fluid within the joint. The smooth articular cartilage covering the surfaces of the femoral head and acetabulum allows for frictionless movement.

Disorders of the hip joint can range from developmental conditions like hip dysplasia to degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. Injuries, including fractures and dislocations, are also common, particularly in older adults or as a result of trauma. Pain in the hip joint can manifest in various ways and may be referred from other areas. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and severity, and can include conservative measures like physical therapy and medication, or surgical interventions such as hip replacement.
