Csontmineralizációt refers to the process by which bone tissue hardens through the deposition of calcium and phosphate salts. This is a crucial aspect of bone development and maintenance, transforming the initial cartilage or fibrous matrix into a rigid, supportive structure.

The process begins with the formation of an organic matrix, primarily composed of collagen fibers. Osteoblasts, specialized bone-forming cells, then begin to secrete alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme that raises the local pH. This increased pH facilitates the precipitation of calcium and phosphate ions from the bloodstream, forming hydroxyapatite crystals. These crystals then deposit onto and within the collagen matrix.

This mineralization process is tightly regulated by various hormones and growth factors. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D play significant roles in calcium and phosphate homeostasis, influencing their absorption, reabsorption, and deposition in bone. Calcitonin, on the other hand, can inhibit bone resorption and thus indirectly affect mineralization.

Adequate mineralization is essential for bone strength and integrity. Deficiencies can lead to skeletal deformities and increased susceptibility to fractures, as seen in conditions like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, both characterized by a lack of sufficient mineral content in bone. Conversely, excessive mineralization can lead to bone rigidity, making it more brittle.
