Csontképződés, more commonly known as ossification or osteogenesis, is the process by which bone tissue is formed. This is a fundamental biological process that occurs throughout life, from embryonic development to bone repair. There are two main types of ossification: intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification.

Intramembranous ossification is the process by which bone develops directly from mesenchymal connective tissue. This occurs in flat bones of the skull, the clavicles, and parts of the mandible. Mesenchymal cells differentiate into osteoblasts, which secrete osteoid, the unmineralized matrix of bone. This osteoid then mineralizes, and the developing bone forms within the mesenchyme.

Endochondral ossification is the process by which bone develops from a pre-existing cartilage model. This is the primary method of bone formation for most bones in the body, including long bones like the femur and humerus, as well as vertebrae and ribs. A hyaline cartilage model is first formed, and then it is gradually replaced by bone. This process involves the formation of a primary ossification center in the diaphysis (shaft) and secondary ossification centers in the epiphyses (ends) of the bone.

Ossification is crucial for skeletal growth, development, and maintenance. It is also essential for the healing of bone fractures. While ossification is a continuous process, it slows down significantly after skeletal maturity is reached, although bone remodeling and repair continue throughout life.
