Csiszolóanyagok, often translated as abrasives, are hard granular materials used for grinding, polishing, lapping, or cutting. They are typically composed of natural or synthetic minerals, bonded together into a usable form. The effectiveness of an abrasive material depends on its hardness, toughness, friability, and particle size. Hardness is crucial for its ability to cut or wear away the workpiece material. Toughness refers to its resistance to fracture, while friability is the tendency of the abrasive grains to break down into smaller particles during use, which can expose new sharp edges and maintain cutting ability. Particle size, or grit, determines the surface finish produced; coarser grits remove material faster and create a rougher finish, while finer grits produce a smoother finish.

Common natural abrasives include quartz, garnet, and emery. Synthetic abrasives, which are generally harder and more uniform, have largely replaced natural ones in many applications. Key synthetic abrasives include silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, and diamond. Silicon carbide is very hard and brittle, making it suitable for lapping, grinding soft materials, and polishing. Aluminum oxide is tough and durable, widely used for grinding steel and other ferrous metals. Diamond, the hardest known material, is used for cutting and grinding extremely hard materials like ceramics and carbides, as well as for polishing.

Abrasives are supplied in various forms, such as loose grains, coated abrasives (bonded to a backing like paper or cloth), bonded abrasives (where grains are held together by a bonding agent in wheels or stones), and superabrasives (diamond and cubic boron nitride) for specialized high-performance applications. The selection of the appropriate abrasive material and its form depends on the material being worked, the desired outcome, and the equipment used.
