Cryogenic temperatures are commonly defined as well below room temperature, often around or below -150 degrees Celsius (123 kelvin), depending on the context. The field encompasses liquefaction, storage, and transfer of cryogenic fluids such as liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and liquid helium. Applications include superconductivity research, space technology, medical preservation, and various industrial cooling and manufacturing processes. Typical technologies involve cryostats, Dewars, and insulation designed to minimize heat transfer.

If intended as cryptogenic, the term means of unknown origin or cause. In medicine, cryptogenic describes conditions where a disease or event cannot be attributed to an identifiable source after evaluation, such as cryptogenic stroke or cryptogenic liver disease. The root is kryptos, meaning hidden. The term is also used in other disciplines to indicate unresolved provenance or cause.

Because the two correct terms convey different ideas, it is important to use cryogenic or cryptogenic when the intended meaning is clear. The blended form “crytogenic” is generally avoided in technical writing to prevent ambiguity.
