Cryptosecurity refers to the practices and technologies used to protect information and systems through the application of cryptography. It is a critical component of cybersecurity, aiming to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data in both storage and transit. The core principle of cryptosecurity lies in using mathematical algorithms to transform readable data into an unreadable format, known as ciphertext, and then back again, a process called decryption.

Key elements of cryptosecurity include encryption, which scrambles data, and decryption, which unscrambles it. Cryptographic keys are essential for these processes; a secret key is used for symmetric encryption, where the same key encrypts and decrypts, while public and private keys are used for asymmetric encryption, offering more flexibility for secure communication between parties who haven't pre-shared a secret.
