The field is traditionally divided into cryptography, which concerns the construction of secure algorithms and protocols, and cryptanalysis, which studies how such security can be broken or tested. Cryptology also includes key management, protocol verification, and the evaluation of practical security against various attack models.

Historically, cryptology traces back to ancient ciphers, but its modern form arose with the development of mathematical foundations in the 20th century. Claude Shannon's information-theoretic approach established formal notions of secrecy and security. The advent of public-key cryptography in the 1970s, notably Diffie-Hellman key exchange and RSA, transformed the field by enabling secure communication over insecure channels without prior shared keys.

Typical cryptographic tools include encryption algorithms (symmetric and asymmetric), hash functions, digital signatures, and random number generation. Security properties include confidentiality, integrity, authentication, non-repudiation, and availability. Symmetric schemes use one key; asymmetric schemes use a key pair. Protocols such as key exchange and secure messaging rely on careful design and rigorous analysis.

Cryptanalysis studies weaknesses and develops methods to break cryptosystems, using brute-force, mathematical attacks, and side-channel analysis. Security rests on computational hardness assumptions. Cryptology underpins modern technologies and standards, including secure web protocols and digital currencies, and it continues to evolve with research in quantum resistance and post-quantum cryptography.
